在剛過去的父親節，不少團體向政府施壓，就男士侍產假（paternity leave）盡快立法。

 

　　Paternity解「父權、父子關係、父親的身份」，是書面用語，尤常見於法律領域。政府可以立法定侍產假，規定僱主提供有薪假期給男性僱員，好讓他們照顧產後的妻子及初生子女。英文稱「侍產假」為paternity leave；女性產假則稱為maternity leave。

 

　　在法律範疇，paternity一字還常見於親子鑑定訴訟（paternity suit/case）。科技先進，DNA親子鑑定（DNA paternity test）比滴血認親可靠千萬倍。例如：conduct DNA tests to determine paternity（進行DNA測試，鑑定親子關係）。

 

香港貧富懸殊問題嚴重

 

　　香港的堅尼系數（Gini coefficient）創40年新高，達0.537水平，遠高於警戒線0.4，反映貧富懸殊（disparity between the rich and the poor）嚴重。

 

　　Disparity是名詞，解「差別、不等、懸殊」，尤指對待不公平所致的差別。堅尼系數正是反映收入分配是否公平的指標，貧富懸殊亦或多或少反映社會不公平，將「貧富懸殊」譯作disparity between the rich and the poor最好不過。

 

　　Disparity是書面用語，口語一點可用gap ，例如：the gap between the rich and the poor。想更簡潔，用wealth disparity/gap亦可，例如：The government downplayed the wealth gap（政府將貧富差距輕描淡寫）。

 

做事別本末倒置

 

　　政府堅持拆卸舊政府總部西座，搬出的解釋諸如興建道路以疏導交通及興建環保摩登大樓，均被認為是本末倒置（put the cart before the horse）。

 

　　把事情的先後、主次、輕重的位置顛倒，中文謂「本末倒置」，英文用put the cart before the horse。例句：Since the construction waste produced by the west wing demolition may not be compensated by the waste reduction of the new green building, the government was criticised for putting the cart before the horse. （政府被指本末倒置，因新環保大樓所減少的廢物，或不能抵銷拆卸西座的建築廢料）。

 

　　Cart除了解「馬拉的運貨車」，還可以指「手推車」，例如shopping cart（購物車）、tea cart（茶水車）等。英式英文則用trolley，都是指這類裝有腳輪的手推小車。
